Dual-Sport/Adventure

Some AMA members love splitting their time riding on the road and off, on the same trip. These photos show why. (Send your photos to submissions@ama-cycle.org.)

  • "In the area where I live you can purchase an Access Permit from the 'Famous Reading Anthracite' company to ride on their land.  This is a great program because there's no other legal access to trails around me. So, this is what's cool about motorcycling in northeastern Pennsylvania. - Todd Nebel of Macungie, Pa.

  • A group of my motorcycle friends did a ride over the five days (8-26-09 thru 8-31-09) on a route through Wisconsin called the TransWisconsin Adventure Trail. It runs from Dubuque, Iowa to Cornucopia, Wis., on Lake Superior, north of Bayfield. About 540 miles in total, roughly half of it was on paved rural roads. The rest ranged from country gravel to fire service roads to ATV trails and goat paths. A few times the road was closed or the bridge missing, but that didn't always stop us. We had two sidecar rigs in the group, a Buell/Velorex rig nicknamed the the Battle Buell, and my Ural Tourist. Both machines handled the trail at least as well as the two-wheeled machines. It was a great trip with great friends. From left to right, the picture includes- Mike Etlicher, Kevin Kocur, Gus Breiland, Kevin Wynn, Marty Leir, Will Outlaw, Howard Stueber and Victor Wanchena." - Kevin Wynn of Minneapolis.
  • "The eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near the little town of Bridgeport, Calif. I love bouncing around on mining roads with my little 200cc Suzuki DR dual sport looking for interesting places to photograph." - John Mellquist of Napa, Calif.
